Eight Fridays, 24 January to 14 March, 2025 including kit $295

This is an advanced course.  Experience working on a slate frame with both hands free to stitch is required.

The project is derived from the flowers and fruits embroidered on the 16th century Broderers' Crown. Each week there will be an email with the pdf instructions for a new flower or fruit, providing step by step detailed photographs, patterns, placement diagrams and written instructions. The approximately one hour Zoom sessions will feature insights into the practice of embroidery in the Tudor era. Each week will include a spotlight on a prominent Tudor embroiderer, an in-depth look at a rarely seen extant embroidery, and an up-close examination of the painted embroidery in a Tudor portrait. The sessions will be recorded and available on the private class page on the website for those who cannot attend the zoom.

For those who would like a review of how the course will unfold, an introductory zoom will take place on Friday January 17 at noon EST. The course will begin with an email on Monday 20 January and the first week’s one hour Zoom will take place on Friday January 24, 2025 at noon or 6pm EST. You can attend either or both!
A kit will be provided with all the fibres and fabrics you’ll need including silk thread, metal threads, muslin and ground fabric. Instructions in pdf with step-by-step detailed photographs, patterns, placement diagrams and written instructions will be sent weekly on the Monday prior to the Friday Zoom. Included as well are the line drawings for two earlier versions - Invenire Gaudium and Joan’s 100th Birthday Garden - just in case you are inspired to continue stitching. There will be a private facebook page for participants to post any questions, comments and photos of your progress. Please note: there will not be follow along videos for this project. Also, please note it is a
very challenging project with lots of minute stitches and metal thread manipulation so patience and good vision (or a magnifier) is essential!

You will need to have the following supplies on hand: a 14” slate/scroll frame with 12” side bars and the string and twill tape for framing up. Kimono Silk Sewing thread size #100 in colour 304 (or YLI #100 col 215). You will also need standard embroidery equipment including: beeswax, mellor or laying tool, tweezers, thimble or thimble patches (very important to protect fingers in the final stages of assembly), embroidery scissors (two pair), needles (embroidery or crewel 6, 8, 10, short sharp beading 12, and chenille 20), velvet cutting board, ruler, pins, pencil, pounce powder and applicator, a white gel pen, white craft glue that dries clear and won’t yellow, brush to apply.
